From Fenty’s highlighter overdose to Rodarte’s romance with colour, these are our top 5 beauty trend takeaways from New York Fashion Week.
1. Highlight the body
Everyone at Rhianna’s Savage x Fenty show shined – partly because of the feeling of female empowerment in the air, and partly because of the liberal use of Fenty Beauty highlighter. Make-up artist Priscilla Ono dusted models all over in Diamond Bomb All-Over Diamond Veil giving their bodies a luminous glow. For a subtler look, try taking the highlighter to your décolletage and shoulders for a summer sun-kissed glow.
2. Hair hardware is a hit
It’s no secret hair accessories are in – but it’s how you clip it that counts. American designer Tibi took hair clips to a new level clasping them haphazardly through hair lengths. Could some creative clipping replace a fascinator at this year’s spring racing carnival? Give it a go!
3.The new smoky
For sexy summer evening eye-inspo, look no further than Tom Ford’s 70s inspired smoky eye. Swapping charcoal for tawny hues, the artists backstage used a palette of muted browns and a hint of gold to create the glamorous look. Be sure to finish with a rose-pink blush and a nude lip.
4. Pack a brow pencil case
While pin-thin brows have been threatening a comeback (everything always comes back around!) Brandon Maxwell sent brushed up and bushy brows down the runway putting to bed our thin brow nightmares. Backstage makeup artist Tom Pecheux strongly endorsed using multiple brow pencils in a range of shades to create a more natural look as opposed to the monotone block brows we’re used to seeing.
5. Colour is primary
What can we take from the biggest beauty moment of New York Fashion Week? Colour is queen! If you’re still hesitant about the bright-eye shadow look, try it the Rodarte way. Make-up artist James Kaliardos was inspired by a Picasso exhibition at The Tate and used primary colours to create soft geometric shapes on the face by pressing – not sweeping – the NARS shadow into the lid. He then blended the edges to create a soft winged effect. Kaliardos recommended using a lid primer to keep the colour bright and budge-free – try NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base.
